Church Design and Architecture

I recently visited the Churchill memorial in Fulton, housed in a church founded in London in 1141. Designed by architect Christopher Wren, it was rebuilt from a fire in the 1600s and restored from World War II devastation when rebuilt in Fulton in the mid-1960s. I was fascinated by the structure’s design, its accompanying English garden, and its history with Wren, Milton, Shakespeare, and Churchill.

Designing church buildings is a sacred task. After all, the structure is where the real church, the people, meet and where eternal destinies are sealed. Jesus would agree with our Belarus friends who fondly refer to each church building as a “house of prayer.” Church buildings are special places of special (divine) design.

Most buildings start as a dream, develop into plans, and reach reality. The process is a spiritual journey for a congregation. Faith, prayer, cooperation, and stewardship are necessary ingredients. A capital fundraising campaign with these ingredients can minister to countless needs, be a vehicle for spiritual growth and keep the fellowship focused.

Just as architects are needed to design buildings, a comprehensive fundraising tool is necessary to design an effective program, equip pastors and lay-leader teams, and build upon the synergy God creates through His people. Foundations Capital Stewardship Program is such a tool.
